We arrived in Southeast France from Italy on Sunday18th May, cycled across (in the most indirect way) and through to Spain on Sunday 7th June. 3 weeks total and roughly 1300km.
CYCLING HIGHLIGHTS
The Gorge du Verdon, the grand canyon of Europe. Despite setting out in the rain and it being a hard days cycling. The views made it amazing...
Bike route from Forcalquier to Apt. A big contrast to the canyon. flat, bike path. rolling green hills, poppies, cherrys....
The final full days cycling. sunshine seemed marvellous as first in a while. views of hilltop chateus and mountains and villages very cool....
Most exhilerating downhill - down Mt Ventoux. I even whooped in excitement...
THE WEATHER
can we change the topic? rain. rain. rain. we were told that apparently it was the most rain for this time of year in 80 years! Fortunately, even though we were cycling most days I don´t remember actually cycling in the rain that much. Mostly overcast, the feeling of it´s about to rain... then it would rain once we had the tent up at the campground. Was probably most annoying at Avignon, a beautiful walled city, which would have been really fun to explore if it hadn´t have been raining. plus i think the rain encouraged all the digusting insects...
THE FOOD
The french know how to do good bread... we had a Boulangerie stop almost every day to buy fresh baguette and usually another type such as nut or fig bread... plus a delicious pastry if we felt like one (Byrdie had an addiction for an almond pastry).
Wine was cheap... always the excuse of must try a local wine.
Summer fruits have arrived. delicious peaches, apricots, cherries.... and just as cheap (or cheaper) than in NZ... yum
