What a different place! Not just the famous red light district and coffee shops. There are bikes everywhere. Literally thousands. Canals with lovely old narrow buildings all leaning this way and that.
A bit paranoid about bikes getting stolen. well, Byrdie is anyway. We had to do a trip back to our bikes (on a ferry) to rearrange the bike locks. Today Byrdie decided we should walk. What a first! Usually she likes to cycle everywhere. A bit ironic when Amsterdam is bike city. For a lot of people it is their main form of transport. There are cycle lanes everywhere... I think eventually she will relax...
We did a wonderful 'free' walking tour. 3-4 hours around the centre of the old city. The american girl doing it was really good. enthusiastic. great story teller. not boring... learnt about everything from the prostitutes paying 150 euro a night for window rental, to stuff about Anne Frank. At the end they ask for a tip. Although Byrdie is usually hesistant to spend money, if it is a donation she is generous...
