From Florence we jumped on a train to Pisa, 2 hour stopover, plenty of time before train to Rome. Train was running late. By the time we stocked up at patissery and supermarket, we had a very rushed visit to the leaning tower of Pisa and back to the train station. A rushed visit and a few cheesy photos pretending to hold up the tower is all you probably need though....
Rome is wonderful! So much to do.... so much to simply look at.
We are staying a popular campground fairly close to the city centre. Our first day we took a bus in and then did a hop on, hop off bus all day. was a great way to get a feel for the place. Initially we were going to line up for the Vatican, but the line just went on and on.... we would have been waiting for hours.
Yesterday we biked from the campground about 6.15am to beat all the tourists to the popular sites. Was well worth doing, as some sites that were absolutely packed the day before, we had all to ourselves...
Duckie and I went into the Colesseum and then we spent the rest of the day generally exploring by bike. Byrdie bought a new bikini (well needed).
Today we left the campground very early again to beat the queues to St Peters and The Vatican. We arrived in town about 6.30am... Byrdie lined up at the Vatican, which doesn't actually open until 8.45am; she was about 7th in queue... I went to St Peters, which opened at 7am, no queue at all... is amazing inside. A couple from Christchurch happened to queue behind Byrdie, so looked after our bags (and our place in line) and she joined me at St Peters...
The Vatican is amazing and well worth doing (and definitely worth getting in queue early for, maybe 2hrs before opening is slightly overboard).
This afternoon, we have done some more general exploring, had a picnic in a park. Byrdie persuaded me to to the touristy thing and have my portrait done...
