Trulli and Caves

From Rome we got up bright and early (again), called into a delicious patissery and took one last look at St Peters..

We then took a bus to Alberobello (and were gutted to find our bikes cost and extra €32, when the ticket office had said 'bikes. no problem'). We only ended up going to Alberobello, because we wanted to take a ferry to Dubrovnik, southern Croatia. They only leave from Bari, only twice a week. So we had time to fill in. looked at the cycle guide for routes near Bari. We soon found ourselves staying at the Trulli capital of the world and visiting Italys biggest caves...

Alberobello is the Trulli capital. The what? Trulli are conical stone dwellings, which originally had no mortar so apparently they could be dismantled quickly to avoid paying tax on dwellings... see photos... Was very cool cycling along with olive trees, vines and trulli...

From Alberobello we cycled to Grotte de Costaglione, we we did a guided tour of part of Italys largest caves. was pretty amazing...

We then cycled into Bari, just in time for a festival. Choral singing in the square, food stands...
