South of Mainz the cycling was less interesting. still very flat. lots of farmland. not many cutesy villages, but citys. We were following the Rhine river route, but often the river was out of sight.
Pink rock must have been commonly used in this region - all the old churches/castles etc are pink in all the towns since Mainz.
Today we arrived at Heidelberg. Very pretty city. very colourful cute buildings. with a river running right through...
We went up to the pink castle partially in ruins and had to push our bikes up a very steep, pink cobblestoned path to get there. The problem with not staying in a place is having our fully loaded bikes with us at all times. We can´t just lock ém and leave ém. The view was spectacular though. We just had to run for cover about 4 times when there were short rain showers.
We are about to take yet another train (well actually 3 trains) to get to Rothenburg. A very pretty (but touristy) old town... It is on the ´romantic road´, which we will follow south.
