We took a train to Krakow and stayed one night with Dereks (the bookshop guy) friend.
Then we took another train up to Zakopone in the Tatry Alps which border Slovakia and Poland. It was raining when we turned up and after cycling around and finding the hostels full we stayed in a private room. The host was very welcoming. showing us the hotwater cupboard heated with fire "hot", the heaters "hot", the taps "hot", the toilet "hot" (?). I think his english vocabulary was limited.
Yesterday the weather cleared and we shifted to a campground before heading off to walk in the alps. The idea was to follow the bike route right up to one of the mountain huts at the base of the peaks. The bike track was unridable. Rocky, uneven surface. In the end we locked our bikes and walked. The mountains were beautiful. Was not just a walk in the park though: amateur rock climbing, abseiling.... lots of fun. but turned into a 10 hour mission and we had to walk quickly to get to our bikes before it got too dark. The rocky, uneven path is not easy to walk quickly on and in the dark.... Was an adventure, except my feet now have terrible blisters...
