Byrdie and her plastic bags

Byrdie doesn't like plastic bags.

Way back in the old days when we were in Turkey, we would get given plastic bags no matter how small the purchase (a bit like in NZ really). Byrdie would insist on saying "hayir bag, no bag", doing her bit for the environment. Great confusion would follow. The shop keeper would not understand. Partly because I'm sure that 'bag' is not turkish for 'bag', but also just not understand why we wouldn't like a bag. Finally, they would grudgingly take the bag back or Byrdie would grudgingly accept the bag. Our last few days in Turkey, Byrdie started to quite happily accept plastic bags. I queried this. "In Europe they have a no bag policy so I'm saving them".

Byrdie loves plastic bags

At any given time Byrdie will have 2-3 layers of plastic bags for the food, all her baggage in different plastic bags, possibly some on her bike drying (a bit like a bag lady on bike) or if it is cold some on her feet....

The excitement when she finally came across zip lock bags in a supermarket! She could finally replace her 'wallet'. The zip-lock-bag-wallet has to be repaired with half a roll of tape and money still falls out before it warrents being replaced. After being pickpocketed the police in all seriousness asked her the value of her plastic bag. Fortunately she managed to find the (empty) zip-lock-bag-wallet in a garden near the train station and continued to use it.
