Greek Islands: Rhodes and Kos

morning we left Marmaris, Turkey:

Sorry to all my fans out there that it has been a while since I have written... just kidding.

So, from Turkey we took a fast ferry to Rhodes. The main town Rhodes has a medieval area surrounded by high stone walls, a maze of narrow stone alleyways. very cool. Our original plan was to spend a few days cycling around the island and then ferry to another island. probably crete. We stayed at "Mikes & Mamas" hostel, the first hostel we randomly came to. At midday we knocked on the door and a sleepy Mike comes to the door. He insisted on a "Greek welcome" and offered us coffee. turned out to be coffee, eggs, bread, cheese.... he talked and talked. a musician/songwriter you see, quite hard done by. a gambler. as he added gin to his coffee. sang us a song. wondered why we didn't join in... played some more of his music, insisted on translating it as it played. had beaut view from roof garden though.
Byrdie decided the next day that we should check out other accommodation options for later in the week when we had to stay in Rhodes town again... so as we were wandering the streets we came across another hostel "Nassos". same price. great shower the guy said and he had Byrdie at 'free tea and coffee'.
The next day we jumped on our bicycles and headed down the island. along a not very scenic, busy road. we stopped at a few okay beaches along they way. Byrdie suggested maybe we should get a bus back that afternoon and take the ferry the next morning to Crete, instead of waiting 4 days for the next ferry. I agreed. so we arrived in Lindos, a touristy small villiage. the next bus was leaving in 45min so we did a whirlwind tour and waiting at the busstop. unfortunately we waited at the wrong bus stop and the bus went straight past us. so we had another 2.5hrs to do a more thorough look at the cute white buildings and nice beach. We boiled up some water on the gas cooker and had a coffee on the beach....
Back to Rhodes town on a bus and found out the ferry had been cancelled. so booked to come to Kos instead... then we had the mission of finding the wonderful "Nassos" in the dark through the maze.... we eventually found it after asking people on every few corners... one guy got interrogated by Byrdie about which direction the marina was and the square etc... because she thought we were facing the exact opposite direction to what we were and wouldn't believe the local.
"Nassos" turned out to be a tip... dirty beds. Cold showers. no free coffee and tea in sight. Mike's suddenly seemed quite nice in comparision.
Yesterday we arrived at Kos... sleepy from having a nap on the ferry and hungry. to be greeted by persistent men trying to sell hotels... very annoying. ate a big lunch and heading down to the other end of the island stopping at all the beaches along the way. interesting combination of quiet farms. men milking cows by hand. and closed tourist resorts. We arrived at kefalos at the southern end of the island and everything (except one restaurant) was closed. we ended up asking a man who chatted in greek to a lady, who led us to another man who then had a very animated discussion of which we had no idea what they were talking about. He didn't seem that pleased though. then he lead us to his motel units, opened one and said. sleep here. no money. no money. sweet.... our own kitchen/bathroom/bedroom. for free. and postive luxury compared to our previous nights in Rhodes....
Today we cycled the other side of the island back up to the main centre where we are staying at a nice (but relatively expensive) pension.... just cooked dinner on the gas cooker. but tried to be discrete in case the owner wouldn't approve...
Tomorrow to the island of Patmos.... a small island. so i'm thinking no cycling, just relaxing on the beach...
Greece seems expensive after Turkey. Especially now that we are spending Euros. At least we managed to get the correct camping gas at the first supermarket we came to, so have been able to cook all our own meals. And we have been eating ALOT. it is actually not that nice biking on a full, bloated stomach. Byrdie was saying how full she felt and then two minutes later decided to buy an icecream...

Hehe... you're going to stack on the weight if you keep up the eating without all the cycling when you get back ;-)
